Basic Veneering

Evening - Monday, February 6th; 5:30-9:30pm 10 sessions

Using veneers expands the types of wood and designs that you can include in your projects.  Many of the finest quality and exotic woods are only available as veneers.  Veneers are thin slices of wood, approximately 1/32" in thickness.  They are adhered to substrates of less expensive wood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF).

Veneers can be arranged on the substrate to present the appearance of a finished board or to produce a variety of patterns.  These patterns typically include:

  • Book-matched

  • Radial matched

  • Slip matched, or

  • Diamond matched

Students in the class will:

  • prepare surfaces and veneers,
  • learn to prepare the veneer saw for use,
  • learn simple techniques for perfect straight cuts and joint,
  • use edge banding, and
  • will make one or more matched patterns using a hand press and vacuum press.
  • Glues and substrates will be discussed.

The  techniques and skills will be applied to the making of a chess board.

Tuition: $450 and a materials fee estimated to be $75. It will be finalized at the end of class. Ten 4-hour sessions.  A $50 deposit is required to confirm your reservation.
