Richard Kell Honing Guides
The Kell Precision Honing Guide was developed in
England by Richard Kell to cope with narrow and short chisels and plane blades,
which makes it suitable for Japanese chisels and mini plane irons. It will
accept blades up to 1-5/16" wide (We suggest 1 1/4). It is made of stainless
steel and brass with low abrasion 'Ertalite' rollers. Since the rollers are
outboard of the blade, the jig is rock steady and will not wobble as you hone.
Two polycarbonate washers are included to cope with non-parallel chisels. The
brass bobbin diameters are turned to plus or minus 0.001" and are selectively
assembled in matched pairs to be within a tolerance of 3/10000". This coupled
with the 'Ertalite' rollers being turned in pairs means Richard has done his
best to give you an accurate product. Richard Kell makes two versions of this guide. The No. 1 handles tools from 0" to 1 1/4" wide. (No. 1 is ideal for very narrow tools, where the Somax guide leaves off.) The No. 2 handles tools up to 2 5/8". (The No. 2 is not recommended if you are using 3" wide sharpening stones.) |
