Paul Schürch

Paul currently owns and operates a custom woodworking shop specializing in marquetry which produces up to 30 pieces of fine furniture per year.  For several years he has been teaching furniture making, veneer work and marquetry, and he is now dedicated to the task of passing on the knowledge he has received from the many fine teachers and masters of the trades.  Since 1979, Paul has passed this knowledge on to many people who have successfully completed seminars, apprenticeships and advanced internships in his shop. Up until 1995, he traveled once a year to Northern Italy to work in a small shop specializing in production marquetry for the furniture trade.  He would bring his own projects in the form of drawings and raw wood veneer, and work side by side with some of the finest craftsmen in the world.  They gave him a workbench, help when he needed it, and the techniques that he is still using today.  The experience of working with these masters and journeymen was incredibly inspiring.  They gave so freely of themselves, their secrets and techniques so he could pursue the ideas and visions he had for his own furniture designs as well as his future as a teacher.  When Paul started his internship in marquetry, there were about twenty businesses in this area of Italy producing marquetry, and now he understands there are only two shops left.  It is his hope that you will make good use of this information, the techniques and tools that he has to offer, as well as allowing him to introduce you to the art of decorative veneering.  He wishes to instill confidence, and inspire students to explore this fine craft on their own projects, and to help them to create lasting works of art that will be handed down for generations to come.

Video and Companion Book on 'Decorative Veneering' by Paul Schürch

This is an informative, detailed, and high-quality 80 minute video on the art of Decorative Veneering by Paul Schürch.  This first video covers an introduction to veneer, an overview and history, ordering, storing, and flattening veneer, designing with veneers, core materials, demonstration of tools, cutting techniques, sharpening, and a demonstration of assembly techniques used in creating a panel.  The use of glues, veneer presses, sanding, finishing will be covered and a portfolio of marquetry furniture conclude this video.  The companion booklet includes information from the video as well as design theory, detailed instructions, illustrations, an extensive glossary, resource list and tool catalogue.
